What sizes are there for boxing gloves?

Boxing glove sizes are usually measured in ounces (Oz). It should be noted, however, that ounces are actually a weight (1 ounce (oz) = 28.35 grams) and not a size. Ounces describe the weight of a boxing glove.

In this context, the following rule of thumb applies: the heavier the weight, the more padding and cushioning is used, and the thicker the boxing gloves become. Viewed from the outside, this often increases the size and volume. The inner size for the hand, on the other hand, remains the same.

In rare cases, in addition to the Oz specification, different sizes for particularly small or large hands are also specified for boxing gloves. However, this is an absolute exception. Most boxing gloves are offered in 10 oz, 12 oz, 14 oz and 16 oz. In exceptional cases also in 8 Oz, 18 Oz or even 20 Oz.

Which boxing glove size do I need?

As described, the size of boxing gloves is given in ounces (Oz). This number usually describes how thick or thin boxing gloves are padded. When choosing the right boxing gloves, the main thing is the intended use. Another important aspect is your own body weight.

Factor 1: Purpose

The most important question before buying is: Do you need your glove for competitions, for sparring, for pad training or sandbag training? For example, for competitions, our most popular model is the Professional glove Phantom Apex with lacing.

However, professional athletes commonly use several pairs of boxing gloves for their training and switch to other models depending on the purpose. Beginners, who mostly only have one pair of boxing gloves, often use 12 Oz or 14 Oz models, as these are suitable for most training sessions.

Our best-selling boxing glove models for beginners and advanced are these Phantom apex boxing gloves or even that Phantom ultra boxing gloves.

Factor 2: body weight

It should also be mentioned that choosing the right size depends on your own body weight should be made dependent. Since the impact force also increases with increasing body weight, you also need more shock absorption to protect your own hands and your training partner.

For this reason, heavier athletes should go for a higher ounce number (14 Oz or 16 Oz), while lighter athletes should go for 10 Oz or 12 Oz.

What types of boxing gloves are there?

In martial arts, boxing gloves have the purpose of protecting the fighter's hands, as well as the face and head of the training partner or opponent. All models are fundamentally very similar and consist of two parts:

  1. Padding that protects the hands including the thumb
  2. A part that supports the wrist and closes the boxing glove

However, the different models can have very different designs and vary greatly in the type of padding, closure mechanism (Velcro or lacing) as well as design and cut.

Since boxing gloves are used in various sports, such as classic boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA training or many other sports and self-defense types, there are a variety of models that respond to individual requirements.

Classic boxing gloves with Velcro fastening

Classic boxing gloves, especially in... Olympic boxing are often worn slim and narrow cut. They usually have a Velcro wrist closure and solid padding on the front of the gloves. This type of boxing gloves mostly comes in simple colors, such as black or red and blue, for the respective corner in a competition.

Our most popular boxing gloves with Velcro fasteners include the following models:

Professional competition boxing gloves with laces

In the Professional areaGloves with laces are often used instead of gloves with Velcro fasteners. This applies to both competitions and sparring. This has the advantage that the glove adapts better to the athlete's hand and sometimes provides better grip and more stability. The disadvantage, however, is that you always need a training partner or coach to tie the boxing gloves.

Our best model for advanced fighters and professionals:

muay thai boxing gloves

Muay Thai boxing gloves are available in Thai boxing carried. In addition to normal punches, knee and elbow strikes as well as a variety of leg kicks are permitted.

In order to better defend, counter and block these attacks, Thai boxing gloves are often on the outside and inside of the hand more padded. In addition, they often have a particularly reinforced wrist. Muay Thai boxing gloves are often offered in many bright colors and eye-catching designs.

Muay Thai fighters like to buy the following model, which is available in several colors and designs:

Boxing gloves for training and sparring

Boxing gloves are of course most used in... Training and sparring. The most important thing here is to offer the athlete good protection for their hands, as training several times a week can otherwise quickly lead to pain.

This is why we use highest quality materials in all our boxing glove models. We attach great importance to quality in both the upholstery and the outer material.

The materials of the Phantom boxing gloves

Phantom Athletics is committed to animals and environmental protection. For this reason, we always develop new materials for our boxing gloves and our martial arts equipment, which exceed the highest requirements and still do not contain any animal products. All Phantom boxing gloves are therefore 100% vegan.

Used to be Leather boxing gloves manufactured. However, this is no longer necessary these days. Modern high-tech materials are durable, tear-resistant and more comfortable than real leather.

Artificial leather is a much better alternative here. Leather is an outdated and outdated material, especially in full-contact martial arts.

Protection for thumb and wrist

In addition to protecting the hands (especially on the hitting area), Phantom boxing gloves also have excellent protection thumb guard. Particular attention is also paid to this Wrist supportto prevent injuries here. Here, too, we are constantly developing new models with different designs in order to offer you the best possible protection for your wrists.

Boxing gloves for training and sparring are available in 10-16 oz, although sizes of 12 oz or 14 oz are usually chosen.

Our most popular boxing gloves for training and sparring are:

How are MMA gloves different from boxing gloves?

Phantom Athletics not only specializes in boxing gloves, but is also a pioneer in boxing gloves MMA gloves. In MMA, boxing gloves are also often used for stand-up training or sparring. In actual MMA training, you need the right MMA gloves.

The difference between boxing gloves and MMA gloves is that with MMA gloves the fingers and palms are free. This allows the fighter to grab his opponent and use many more techniques than with boxing gloves, such as throws or submission holds from wrestling or BJJ.

You can find our selection of MMA gloves here.

Training with boxing gloves

With boxing gloves you have a variety of training options. The most common are:

Sandbag training

Here you hit the sandbag directly with your boxing gloves. There are different types of punching bags, e.g. ours High performance punching bag or even that one Hydro punching bag. You can practice certain combinations or complete a certain number of rounds.

The big advantage of punching bag training is that you don't need a training partner or trainer.

Partner training

When training with a partner, you often practice certain techniques or combinations one after the other with your training partner. You can also take turns here.

This is an excellent way to learn and practice the technique. Through constant repetition, you can then recall them better in competition or sparring.

Training with a real partner also has the advantage that they can block or dodge your punches, resulting in a realistic training.

sparring

Sparring is a simulated fight with a training partner. As in a real competition, all techniques can be used here and there is usually a specified lap time and number of laps.

When sparring, you often train and fight with an intensity of 50 to 80%, but in direct preparation for a competition you can also do so with up to 100%.

Due to the intensity of sparring, it is important to use the right one protective gear of utmost importance. This is the only way you can protect yourself in the best possible way.

pad training

Another popular type of training is pad training. A trainer or training partner holds the claws and the athlete practices different techniques or combinations. There are different types of claws for this:

  • Normal Hand claws (also called “Focus Pads” or “Focus Mitts”)
  • So-called "boxing sticks" or "Boxing paddles(to specifically practice focus, accuracy, but also reaction and coordination)

Should you wear bandages under your boxing gloves?

Yes, because boxing bandagesaim to provide your hands with additional protection. They are wrapped around the fingers, hand and wrist, giving the small bones and joints much more stability.

Boxing bandages also have the purpose of absorbing the sweat from your hands and thus protecting your boxing gloves from it (as best as possible). This ensures that your boxing gloves last longer and smell less.

Boxing bandages are available in different colors and lengths to suit every purpose. Please take a look at our range of boxing bandages.

How do I properly care for my boxing gloves?

To keep your boxing gloves in good condition, you should always wear them with bandages, wipe them with a damp cloth after each workout and dry them well. This helps keep unpleasant odors away as best as possible and allows you to enjoy the gloves for a long time.

Another good way to keep your gloves fresh for a long time is the Phantom Odor remover against bacteria and sweat odour.
